Even though time is of the essence, it is necessary for you to exercise some discretion when you are ready a criminal attorney. If this is your first time in a situation like this, you need to be thorough in who you hire and take your time weeding through them.

During your consultation, make sure you spend the majority of the time discussing your case, a plan of action and learning more about how that attorney can represent you. Don't withhold any information or try to minimize any details about your case, be honest so the attorney knows what he is dealing with. Don't bring up the issue about money and fees until everything about your case has been discussed and any other questions you have are been answered.
If you find that you want to hire them, you need to be completely honest about your financial situation. This is not the time to try and negotiate a cheaper fee. You have already explained to the attorney that you are in violation of the law. If you really want to utilize their services but may not have all of the money upfront, let them know. Ask them if they are willing to work out some kind of payment arrangement which will allow you to get your case resolved and give you more time to pay.
Be honest about what you can afford to pay upfront and don't try to lowball. You will find that many criminal attorneys are pretty reasonable about their fees. Keep in mind that a good attorney may cost more that you initially anticipated and you shouldn't let that deter you. Remember, the most important thing is to clear your name to protect your life and prevent damage to your reputation and criminal record which can great reduce your employment opportunities and income in the future.

These are some great tips. I think many people want to put off hiring an attorney because they are afraid that doing so will complicate the matter. When you face criminal charges for whatever reason, however, it's important to call an attorney because they can help to resolve the situation quicker than you ever could on your own. Thanks for sharing your advice on this topic, your article was very helpful! http://www.ptc-law.com
ReplyDeleteBeing open about your case from the initial interview is a great tip when considering hiring an attorney! My uncle had to hire an attorney a few years ago and while he was trying to decide on the best person for the case, he was very honest during all of the initial interviews. He found that most of the attorneys he met with were willing to give their opinions of his chances at winning his case from the very beginning. Had he been vague about his case during those first interviews, he may not have been able to find the right attorney for him! http://www.kalamarides.com/contact

ReplyDeleteMy daughter just got a dui and I want to hire a lawyer as fast as possible. I know that the sooner we get it done the sooner we can start on the case. Hopefully we can find a lawyer that will fight hard enough to get this erased from her permanent record. I don't want one foolish night to mess up her future. http://www.lawyersinarizona.com/dui-lawyer-in-kingman-az-
It's true that you should hire some help sooner rather than later. I think there are a lot of things about the law that I don't know. It would be nice to find someone to teach me about the law and that kind of thing. Watching law shows on TV isn't teaching me very much. http://www.attorneyinjury.com/
ReplyDeleteI have a friend who recently got a DUI and is looking for a good lawyer. He is really worried about the cost of hiring a good attorney. Your tips to be upfront about what you can afford to pay seems like a good idea. Hopefully he can find a good attorney within his price range. http://www.donaldaaron.com/Areas-of-Practice/Criminal-Law/DUI-and-OVI.aspx
ReplyDeleteI really liked that you mentioned a few times that you need to be honest when looking to hire an attorney. Your lawyer will be better able to help you if they know the ins and outs of your case. If you feel like you and the attorney you're interviewing aren't the right fit, still thank them for their time and let them know you appreciate them talking to you. http://www.scottandscottlaw.com/practiceareas.asp
ReplyDeleteGreat point about not putting off hiring a criminal attorney. The sooner you hire an attorney, the sooner they can start working on your case. You want to make sure they have enough time to investigate your case before the trial.

I agree that you should treat meeting your possible attorney like a formal occasion. This can show you that you are serious about your case and want the best lawyer for it. Not only that, but it can also help you see how they will act with your case and with your situation. I would highly recommend doing this to make sure you have the right one for you. http://www.criminallawexperts.com.au/criminal-law.aspx
